DURHAM UNIVERSITY ATHLETICS AND CROSS-COUNTRY CLUB

WELCOME TO ALL NEW FRESHERS!

Summer Term

Great to see a number of strong performances from DUAXC's finest over the exam period. While some athletes focused on training and aim to run quicker times later in the summer, others have begun the track season all guns blazing, with a plethora of Personal Best's and Season's Best amid the occasional club record.

Leading the way was double BUCS semi-finalists Tom Knight, who has run club records over 100m and over the rarely run 150m distance, along with an impressive victory (albeit in a guest appearence) at the North Eastern Counties.

Fresh from his 400m club record at BUCS, Marshall Hungwe has also continued his good form, competing at the prestigious Loughborough International, before runnning a windy 200m PB in York.

Elsewhere on the track, Michael Grimes followed victories over 1,500m and 3000m Steeplechase with a 3:57 1,500 PB at Jarrow, with Alex Robinson also breaking the 4-minute barrier in a marginal PB. Three solid performances at the Isle of Man Festival showed that Alex has put his injury trouble firmly behind him, while outgoing Athletics Captain Alice Robins is also back competing after long term injury.

Owen Walpole still leads the club 800m and 1,500m standings with his early season times, and has since clocked further victories over both distances without getting a real opportunity to better his times. Gareth Phillips is also firmly in PB shape and has had good performances over 100, 200m and the Shot Put, while Ed Hickman-Casey's victory in the Mackay mile shows that he is well on the way to a long awaited sub 2-minute 800m clocking.

Over the longer distances, Jack Hillier, Dan Jenkin and Chris Lowe have all run 16 minute 5km times, while the standard parkrun pros Ollie Cook and Pete Davison have also performed well. Elsewhere, Pat Vis has run well on the track and the roads (over 4 miles), Tori Wells and Emily Field-Lucas have both run 10km PBs, as have Yvonne Farrell, Bria Dickinson and Alice Lilley over the 5km distance.

In windy conditions which affected all the sprinters, Marshall ran a 200m PB and was back under 50 seconds in winning the 400m. Solid runs by Gareth (with an excellent 200m victory) while Mike also claimed back to back wins with a Steeplechase PB. Elsewhere, great to see Alice competing again after long-term injury, even if the expected first-race-back rustiness inevitably affected her performances. Another good 1,500m win for Owen, after a narrow defeat over 800m despite his second quickest run of the season. There were also some good parkrun displays, by the girls (Yvonee, Bria and Alice) on debut, by Ollie who ran a long awaited PB, and by Dan who won in Pontefract.
