DURHAM UNIVERSITY ATHLETICS AND CROSS-COUNTRY CLUB

13th February:

Aviva Uk Indoor Trials and Championships, Sheffield.

DUAXC's highesy performing member continued his strong start to the Indoor Season, running his fastest ever indoor time (and third fastest ever) in coming 4th in his heat at the World Indoor Trials and Senior UK Championships at Sheffield. The sheer fact that Tom was competing in the same heat as Andy Turner (the reigning European and Commonwealth 110m Hurdles title, who would go on to win 200m silver along with hurdles gold) is an acheivement in it self, as well as gracing the same competition as the likes of Dwain Chambers, Jenny Meadows and Jessica Ennis.

Tom is now ranked 5th Junior in the 2011 200m rankings, as well as 29th overall and goes into BUCS Indoors next weekend with genuine medal potential!

200m: Heat 1: 4th Tom Knight: 22:07 (Indoor PB!)

Signals Relays, Hetton Lyon Country Park:

A new event for the club, but a mixed team performed strongly to finish 8th out of 37 club teams. We finished just two places behind the City Harriers team (who themselves included three uni members, and if the top 6 times by university athletes had been put on one team we would have finished 4th!

Leg 1: Alex Robinson 11:23

Leg 2: Chris Lowe 11:59

Leg 3: Phil Harrison 13:51

Leg 4: Alex Robinson (aka. Toby Box) 11:47

Leg 5: Jack Hillier 11:41

Leg 6: Vince Wilson 13:04

Particularly good to see Alex return from injury with two strong legs, but challenged by sub-12 minute times by Jack and Chris. Fair play also to Vince who (while not strictly a university member) ran after Mike was not allowed to run legs for two different teams. But for the record.

6. Durham City Harriers:

Leg 2: Mike Grimes 11:08

Leg 3: Dan Jenkin 11:32

Leg 5: Sam Hatfield 12:56

Team Durham Charity 'Fun' Run: 5(.5?)km

Jack, Phil, Chris, Dan and Sam's relay runs were all especially impressive considering they had already run over 1km as part of a 5 man relay at Maiden Castle earlier in the morning.

A very makeshift DUAXC outfit of Jack, Chris, Phil, Martin and Patrick literally made the decision to run while everyone else was already on the startline and came a narrow 2nd to a Triathlon team which included Martin, Dan and Sam.

Not that as a club we like making excuses but if they had had more notice, time to warm up and the opportunity to wear spikes instead of trainers on  a muddy course they would surely have won and taken the £150 prize.

Elsewhere, the girls team of Juliet, Becca, Tory, Yvonne and Bria were easily the first girls' team, and were just one place behind the university cricket team, which would have been a fantastic scalp

A few brave souls also ran the four lap individual race, and although we have no official results, we have put it down as a 1-2-3-4-5-6-7 for the club, including a (first ever!) race win for Ollie Cook, and a comfortable female victory for Kat O'Mahony - both of whom are continuing their great form

Relay:

2nd: DUAXC Men (Jack Hillier, Chris Lowe, Phil Harrison, Martin Proctor, Patrick Vis)

1st Female Team: DUAXC Women (Juliet Robey, Becca Burbidge, Tory Wells, Yvonne Farrell, Bria Dickinson)

Individual:

1st: Ollie Cook (sub 20 mins)

2nd Ciaren Costello

3rd: Alistair Galt

4th Nick Butler (c. 22 mins)

5th: Kat O'Mahony

6th Josh Platt

7th: Helena French.
